Last week for my work experience, I went to Derrinstown horse stud in Maynooth, Co. Kildare.
I was very nervous going in on my first day, but the vet I was working with, Tom, was very friendly and welcoming. I went around to all the different parts of the stud with him in his jeep, where I got to observe him treating and taking care of the horses. I found it fascinating. Later that day I got the opportunity to do physio therapy on a foal who had a 'hyper flection'. This means that she was born with one of her hoove bant backwards. It was amazing to get that close to a new born foal, especially with her mother there watching.
The second day was very bury. We went around to lots of different places doing routine treatments on the mares and stallions. I also got the chance to stick my whole arm up the rear end of a mare! I got to feel her heart beat, it was amazing. Later that day I did some work on the stud like walking to horses and cleaning out the boxes. I also got to witness a covering, which was...interesting!
On my third day Tom brought me to his brother's vet, which deals with smaller animals like dogs and cats. I got to watch operations like cats being neutered and a dog who had a tumor on his tongue removed. There was so much blood that some even squirted in the vets face! It wasn't pleasant.
My last two days were fairly normal, but enjoyable.
I learned a lot of valuable lessons by the end of week and I walked away with sixty euro! Which was a plus ;)
